Royal Observatory Greenwich

History

The Royal Observatory Greenwich is one of the most important scientific institutions in the world and plays a fundamental role in the history of astronomy, navigation, and timekeeping. It was founded in 1675 by order of King Charles II, with the primary aim of improving maritime navigation and solving the critical problem of determining longitude at sea.

The observatory was designed by the renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren and built on the site of Greenwich Castle, within what is now Greenwich Park. The first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, was tasked with creating accurate star charts and lunar tables to assist sailors in calculating their position while navigating the oceans of the expanding British Empire.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Royal Observatory became a global centre for astronomical research. Scientists working at Greenwich made significant contributions to the study of planetary motion, stellar catalogues, and the precise measurement of time. The observatory’s clocks were among the most accurate ever produced, and Greenwich gradually became the reference point for global timekeeping.

In 1884, the International Meridian Conference held in Washington, D.C., officially established the Prime Meridian as the zero-degree line of longitude, passing directly through the Royal Observatory. This decision made Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) the world’s standard for civil time, cementing the observatory’s global significance.

Due to increasing light pollution and urban expansion, astronomical observations were gradually moved away from London in the 20th century. The Royal Observatory ceased active research operations in 1957, but the site was preserved as a museum and educational centre. Today, it stands as a symbol of humanity’s quest to measure time and space, attracting visitors from all over the world.

How to get there

The Royal Observatory is located in Greenwich Park, in southeast London.

The nearest stations are Greenwich (DLR and National Rail) and Cutty Sark (DLR). From either station, the observatory can be reached with a scenic uphill walk through Greenwich Park.

River bus services on the Thames also stop at Greenwich Pier, offering a pleasant alternative way to reach the area. Several bus routes connect Greenwich with central and southeast London.
